An anchor bolt's length can vary from approximately 6 inches to more than 3 feet, and its diameter can range from 3/8 inch to 1 inch or more. The minimum size is typically 1/2 inch in diameter, embedded at least 7 inches, though municipal codes may have different standards. The purpose of anchor bolts is to fasten structural components to concrete. In our business, steel is usually fastened to concrete using anchor bolts. While the other end is threaded to attach structural support, the first end is implanted in the concrete.
In certain cases, engineers specify that only the exposed, projecting end of an anchor bolt—the portion of the bolt that is lodged in the concrete—should be hot-dip galvanized, if galvanizing is necessary. This partial galvanizing need is typically observed on long anchor bolts. A minimum diameter of 1/2′′ (12.7 mm) and a minimum implanted depth of 7 inches (178 mm) are needed. However, these are only minimum requirements, thus to allow for a margin of error, designers frequently decrease the spacing required or raise the bolt diameter.
